Jump To Recipe

This recipe is simple to follow, but it produces a ham that’s so moist, flavorful, and incredibly delicious. Whether you’re hosting a Christmas feast or just looking for a special meal to enjoy with family and friends, this bourbon-glazed ham is sure to impress. So let’s get started!

Choose a fully cooked ham that is 8 to 9 pounds in weight. Remove your ham from the refrigerator 2 hours before cooking.  If your ham is not a spiral ham, carefully peel off the skin leaving a one inch layer of fat.  Score the fat in a diagonal pattern 1” apart and 1/4” deep.  Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).

Place the ham in a roasting pan, fat side up.  Fill the bottom of the pan with 1/2 inch of water. This will create steam to help keep the ham moist.

In a pan, whisk together the brown sugar, Dijon mustard, bourbon, maple syrup, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves.  Bring this to a boil over medium heat.  Cook stirring until thickened, about 6 to 8 minutes.  Then remove the glaze from heat and set aside.

Pour or ladle the glaze over the ham, making sure to coat it evenly.

Bake for 2-2 1/2 hours, or until the ham reaches an internal temperature of 120 degrees F. Baste the ham with the glaze every 20 minutes.

Let the ham rest for 15 minutes before carving.

Tips:

  • If you don’t have bourbon, you can substitute with another type of whiskey or brandy.
  • For a sweeter glaze, you can add a little more brown sugar.
  • If you like your ham on the crispy side, you can broil it for a few minutes at the end of cooking.
