Easy Slow Cooker Pulled Pork

Easy Slow Cooker Pulled Pork

Pulled pork is a Southern classic that’s perfect for a casual gathering or a backyard barbecue. This slow cooker recipe is easy to make and produces fall-apart tender pork that’s packed with flavor.  This is also a great budget meal for under $10..

My mama use to make the best pulled pork.  It is the best recipe and the great thing about it is that it is budget-friendly. I found a pork roast at the grocery store for 68 cents per pound.  That only cost $10 for 6 lbs. of meat.  So you can you can make a huge meal for under $10.   I would recommend serving it with potato salad or macaroni salad.

I’m going to put 2 tbsp. of olive oil in the bottom of my slow cooker.  Next I’ll add my pork.  You should cut your meat into pieces to allow it to cook more evenly.  This pork roast is great since it will make several meals or serve a large crowd.

Our next step is a teaspoon of onion powder.  A teaspoon of garlic powder and chili powder. Then you want to add your favorite spices.  I am adding my Moroccan mix, a blend which contains ginger, cardamom, paprika, cumin, cloves, cinnamon, allspice, cayenne, bay leaf, orange peel, brown sugar, sea salt  and black pepper. Next add about a teaspoon of salt.   I use Kosher salt.  And I just love my electric salt grinder.

Next add about 1/2 to 1 cup of chicken broth. So easy, it is ready to cook. Just cover it and cook it on low for 10 hours until it pulls apart

Cook the meat until it is to the point that it’s fall apart tender. Now what you will want to do is take forks and just pull this apart.  If you can’t get it to pull apart with the fork, try with your clean hands.

Meanwhile I let my liquids from the slow cooker cool down and let the fat harden. I remove any of the fat from the top.  Then I use it to make my sauce.

I put my juices into a saucepan. I then take my favorite barbecue sauce, Sweet Baby Ray’s and add to these juices. I use about 28 oz. of barbecue sauce. I then stir that together and let that start thickening. I’m going to boil it down to about reduce it by about a third. So you will need to have a good boil on this.

Next add the pulled pork to the sauce and stir that in. Let it the meat heat up and serve on buns.

I use hamburger buns. I like to toast my buns. I just take the buns and spread with some butter on then and put them on medium heat in my iron skillet. I like to serve my sandwich with cole slaw on the top.

Recipe

Easy Slow Cooker Pulled Pork

1 (4-6 pound) boneless pork shoulder or loin roast, cut into pieces
1 tablespoon kosher salt
3 tbsp. Favorite Spice Blend.
(Mine is a Moroccan blend which contains ginger, cardamom, paprika, cumin, cloves, cinnamon, allspice, cayenne, bay leaf, orange peel, brown sugar, sea salt and black pepper.)
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
2 tbsp. vegetable oil
1 cup chicken broth
16 oz. barbecue sauce

Add the vegetable oil to the slow cooker. Next add the pork roast. Sprinkle the spices, salt and pepper over the roast. Pour the chicken broth over the pork roast.
Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or until the pork is fork-tender and shreds easily. Remove the pork roast from the slow cooker and shred the meat with two forks.
Using a large sauce pan, add the drippings from the slow cooker with your favorite barbecue sauce. Boil the sauce until it is reduced by half. Add shredded pork to the pan and stir to combine with the juices.
Serve the pulled pork on buns.
Tips:
• For extra flavor, you can brine the pork shoulder roast overnight in a mixture of water, salt, and brown sugar.
• If you don’t have a slow cooker, you can cook the pork shoulder roast in the oven at 300 degrees Fahrenheit for 6-8 hours, or until it is fork-tender.
• You can also cook the pork shoulder roast on the grill. Preheat your grill to medium-low and cook the pork shoulder roast for 2-3 hours, or until it is fork-tender.
• Serve the pulled pork with your favorite sides, such as coleslaw, potato salad, or macaroni and cheese.
