Kentucky Derby Day Pie, also known as Derby-Pie®, is a chocolate and walnut pie that is popular in the United States, especially in the state of Kentucky. It is typically served at the Kentucky Derby, the annual horse race that takes place on the first Saturday in May.

The pie was created in 1954 by George Kern, a baker from Prospect, Kentucky. Kern’s mother, Leaudra, had been making a chocolate pie with walnuts for years, and Kern decided to add a bourbon glaze to the filling. The pie was an instant hit, and Kern began selling it at his bakery.

In 1964, Kern trademarked the name “Derby-Pie®”. The pie is now sold in stores all over the United States, and there are even several restaurants that specialize in it.

Preheat your oven to 350F or 177C.  Beat the eggs and then add the butter, sugar, flour and bourbon.   Mix these ingredients well. Add the chocolate chips, and nuts.  Stir well.

Pour into partially baked pie shell and bake for 30 minutes, or until center is set.  Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
